A Critical Literature Review of High Performance Corrosion Reinforcements in Concrete Bridge Applications
A critical literature review regarding high-performance reinforcement for concrete bridge applications was conducted. This included (1) an overview of the corrosion-induced concrete deterioration process, (2) corrosion control alternatives, (3) the utility of corrosion (pitting) resistant alloys for applications in chloride containing environments, (4) a review of the pitting mechanism, and (5) performance of various metallic reinforcement types in aqueous solutions, cementations embedments, test yard exposures, and actual structures.

A Laboratory and Field Study of Composite Piles for Bridge Substructures
The purpose of this study was to investigate (1) soil-pile interface behavior of composite piles, (2) the long-term durability of concrete-filled FRP shell composite piles and (3) the driveability and axial and lateral load response of concrete-filled FRP composite piles and steel-reinforced recycled plastic piles by means of field tests and analyses. In addition, a long-term monitoring program was implemented at a bridge over the Hampton River in Virginia. In this document are the results of this study.

Colorados Axial Load Tests on Drilled Shafts Socketed in Weak Rocks: Synthesis and Future Needs
Drilled shaft foundations embedded in weak sedimentary rock formations (shale bedrocks) support a significant portion of bridges in Colorado. In this report, Colorado's typical geological formations and construction methods for drilled shaft foundations are documented and discussed. Available information on Colorado's past axial load tests performed in the last 35 years on drilled shafts socketed in shale bedrocks are documented. The load test results are analyzed and evaluated using Colorado SPT based design methods

Compilation and Evaluation of Results from High-Performance Concrete Bridge Projects, Volume 1:Final Report
The first part of this report involves the collection and compiling of information from each joint State-FHWA HPC bridge project and other HPC bridge projects. The second part consists of a review of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials "Standard Specifications for Transportation Materials and Methods of Sampling and Testing", the AASHTO "Standard Specifications for Highway Bridges," the AASHTO "Load and Resistance Factor Design Bridge Specifications," and the AASHTO LRFD "Bridge Construction Specifications" for provisions that directly impact the use of HPC. The third part is the development of proposed revisions to the AASHTO specifications where sufficient research results to support the revisions. The fourth and last part of this report involves the development of specific recommendations for needed research where sufficient results do not exist to support needed changes in the specifications.

Field Performance of Timber Bridges 21. Humphrey Stress-Laminated T-Beam Bridge
The Humphrey bridge was constructed during the summer and fall of 1993 in Cattaraugus County, New York. Performance of the bridge was monitored for 35 months, beginning approximately 8 months after installation. Monitoring involved gathering and evaluating data relative to the moisture content of the wood components, force level of the stressing bars, and behavior of the bridge under static load conditions.

Multiple Corrosion Protection Systems for Reinforced Concrete Bridge Components
Eleven systems combining epoxy-coated reinforcement with another corrosion protection system are evaluated using the rapid macrocell, Southern Exposure, cracked beam, and linear polarization resistance tests. The systems include bars that are pretreated with zinc chromate to improve the adhesion between the epoxy and the reinforcing steel; two organic corrosion inhibitors; an epoxy-coated bar with a primer containing microencapsulated calcium nitrite; the three epoxy-coated bars with improved adhesion combined with the corrosion inhibitor calcium nitrite; and multiple coated bars with an initial 2 mil coating of 98 percent zinc and 2 percent aluminum followed by a conventional epoxy-coating.

Performance Evaluating of Various Corrosion Protection Systems of Bridges in Colorado
Extensive literature review and field inspections of 16 Colorado bridge decks with various corrosion protection systems found that the protective system consisting of a membrane asphalt overlay was highly effective at keeping Chloride levels low on bridge deck concrete. The Study also found some cases where the epoxy coating failed to protect steel reinforcement from corrosion.
