A Risk-Based Ranking System for CDOT Salt Pile Facilities
The goal of this research is to produce a preliminary facility ranking system, utilizing a riskbased model, that is protective of human health and the environment for salt contamination in soil, groundwater and surface water. Concurrent and parallel activities are to identify salt toxicity values that are appropriate to the ecosystem and habitat in which a facility is located and to develop an approach to identify and evaluate potential impacts to groundwater that may be used as a drinking water source. The objective is to replace a highly subjective backgroundbased standard for remediation with a risk-based, toxicological approach that is based on sound science and meets statutory requirements.

Establishment, Protection and Reestablishment of Urban Roadside Vegetation Against Salt and Ice
Problems of salt as a de-icer on adjacent vegetation. Salty soils are not conducive to healthy vegetation growth, and the absence of healthy vegetation along the road may lead to weed control problems, increased erosion, and resulting damage to the pavement structure. The report outlines salt effects on soil, as well as methods to avoid vegetation damage by salt and ice before it occurs and to repair damage.

Roadside Use of Native Plants
Originally published by U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Office of Natural Environment to promote the planting and care of native plants along highway rights-of-way. Provides information and background to make site-specific decisions about what kinds of native plants to use, and addresses basic techniques and misconceptions about using native plants. State-by-state listings offer: map with natural vegetations zones; comprehensive lists of native plants, broken down by type of plant (grasses, forbs, trees, etc.) and including both scientific and common names, with each list having been verified for completeness and accuracy by the state's natural heritage program; contact names, addresses, and phone numbers for obtaining current information on invasive and noxious species to be avoided; and resources for more information, including contact names and addresses for local experts in each state. Appendix adds definitions, bibliography, and policy citations about the purpose and the direction of the use of native plants on roadsides.

Roadside Weed Management
This publication tells how private landowners and public land managers control or fail to control invasive plants on their side of the fence. The weed seed source does not always originate on the highway side. Weeds move in both directions. Working with our neighbors through increased awareness and partnerships has become a sign of the times. this book shows the problems and preventions methods taken into play for weed control.

Seismic Vulnerability of the Alaskan Way Viaduct: Summary Report
A design-level earthquake would strongly shake the viaduct and cause widespread liquefaction of the underlying loose, saturated soils. The liquefaction would likely cause the foundations to settle and to move laterally. The Alaskan Way Viaduct's reinforcing details make the viaduct particularly vulnerable to strong shaking and to foundation movements induced by liquefaction. In a design level earthquake, the Alaskan Way viaduct would be severely damaged and multiple sections could collapse.
